If you are considering an exhaust upgrade, one of the most important factors is what is under your hood. A turbocharged engine and a naturally aspirated engine respond very differently to exhaust work — and understanding that difference helps you set realistic expectations and make a smarter investment.

How a Naturally Aspirated Engine Responds

On a naturally aspirated engine, the exhaust system is the primary path for burnt gases to exit. Reducing restriction in this path allows the engine to breathe more freely, which improves volumetric efficiency and releases a modest amount of additional power.

The gains are real but not dramatic — typically in the range of 5 to 15 horsepower from a cat-back upgrade on a road car. Where the naturally aspirated engine genuinely shines with an exhaust upgrade is in sound and character. Without a turbo to muffle and filter the engine note, every change to the exhaust system has a direct and immediate impact on how the car sounds. The result is often a more satisfying, more immediate exhaust note that makes the car feel more alive.

How a Turbocharged Engine Responds

The turbocharger changes everything. It sits between the engine and the exhaust system, using exhaust gas energy to spin a turbine and compress intake air. This means the exhaust system has a direct influence on turbo performance — specifically on how quickly the turbo spools and how efficiently it operates at different RPM levels.

Reducing back pressure on the exhaust side of the turbo allows the turbine to spin more freely, which can improve spool time, reduce turbo lag, and allow more boost to be produced at lower RPM. When combined with a supporting ECU tune and an upgraded downpipe, a turbocharged car can see power gains of 20 to 80 horsepower or more — significantly more than a naturally aspirated equivalent.

The Sound Difference

Here is the trade-off: turbocharged cars typically produce a less dramatic exhaust sound improvement than naturally aspirated ones. The turbo acts as a natural silencer, absorbing a significant portion of the exhaust note before it ever reaches the muffler. You can still achieve a great sound with the right system — particularly with a valved setup — and also hear your turbo spool louder than an OEM exhaust sytem

Which Should You Prioritise?

If you drive a naturally aspirated car and your primary goal is sound, an exhaust upgrade delivers excellent value. The transformation in character is immediate and satisfying.

If you drive a turbocharged car and your primary goal is performance, an exhaust upgrade — particularly a downpipe upgrade combined with a tune — delivers more meaningful power gains than on any naturally aspirated equivalent.

Either way, a quality exhaust upgrade improves the overall driving experience. The difference is in what you get most of — and now you know which side of the equation your car sits on.
