The catalytic converter is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — components in your exhaust system. It sits quietly in the middle of your exhaust, rarely talked about until it causes a problem or someone considers removing it. Here is everything you need to know about what it does, how it affects performance and sound, and what your options are.

What Does a Catalytic Converter Do?

A catalytic converter uses a chemical reaction to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones before they exit the tailpipe. Inside the unit is a honeycomb ceramic or metallic substrate coated with precious metals — typically platinum, palladium, and rhodium. As hot exhaust gases pass through, these metals act as catalysts, converting carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons into water vapour and carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen.

It is a remarkably effective piece of engineering. A modern catalytic converter operating at full temperature converts over 99 percent of harmful emissions passing through it.

How It Affects Performance

The catalytic converter creates restriction in the exhaust path. The dense honeycomb structure that makes it effective at filtering emissions also creates back pressure that the engine has to work against. On a stock car this restriction is factored into the engine tune, but it still represents a limit on how freely the exhaust can flow.

This is why high-flow catalytic converters exist. A high-flow cat uses a less dense substrate with different cell counts, reducing restriction while retaining emissions filtering capability. On a performance build, swapping to a high-flow cat can improve exhaust flow meaningfully — particularly on turbocharged cars where exhaust restriction has a direct effect on turbo performance.

High-Flow Cats vs Standard Cats

A standard catalytic converter prioritises emissions compliance above all else. A high-flow cat is a performance-oriented unit that still passes emissions testing in most regions but offers significantly better flow characteristics. For anyone building a performance car that still needs to pass an emissions test, a high-flow cat is the sensible middle ground — you get better exhaust flow without removing emissions equipment entirely.

Where It Sits in the System

On most cars, the catalytic converter sits close to the engine in the downpipe — this is called a close-mounted or pre-cat position. Some cars also have an additional cat further back in the system. The close-mounted position allows the cat to reach operating temperature quickly, which is important for it to function effectively — a cold cat does not catalyse emissions efficiently.

On turbocharged cars, the cat sits after the turbocharger in what is called the downpipe. Upgrading the downpipe to include a high-flow cat is one of the most impactful exhaust modifications available on a turbo car, as it reduces restriction right at the point where exhaust gases exit the turbo at high velocity.

How It Affects Sound

The catalytic converter does affect exhaust sound — it absorbs and dampens certain frequencies as gases pass through the substrate. Removing it or replacing it with a high-flow unit will noticeably open up the exhaust note, adding crackle, volume, and a rawer character. Many people who notice a significant sound change after a cat-back exhaust upgrade have actually fitted a system that deletes or bypasses the cat — the muffler alone rarely produces that level of change.

Keeping It Legal

It is worth being clear: removing a catalytic converter entirely is illegal for road use in most countries. Beyond the legal issue, a car without a functioning cat will fail any emissions test and may trigger fault codes that affect engine management. For performance gains without legal risk, a high-flow cat is always the better route.
